Fabric Types for Curtains and Throw Pillow Cases
More and more homeowners are finding it more to their advantage to make their own curtains and throw pillow cases rather than buy them ready made. With the use of the same fabric for their curtains and throw pillow cases, they are given more freedom to spread a color or texture scheme throughout the room for a more coordinated and unique room décor. Making their own curtains also ensure that the curtain are exactly fitted to the size and shape of a particular window and also make it possible to make tie-backs for the curtains of the same fabric. Some of the most preferred window curtain fabrics are:
Cotton
Cotton is the most common and familiar fabric for window curtains. Cotton is a soft breathable fabric that is an excellent choice for window curtains and throw pillow cases as well as for bed linen and chair covers. It is a natural-fiber cloth that is now produced in a wide selection of colors and patterns and is a very easy fabric to care for.
Chenille
Chenille fabric is made out of chenille yarn. It is a beautiful colored fabric that is soft and fluffy, much like a caterpillar, from which the name of the yarn is derived. Chenille fabrics are a wonderful choice for furniture upholstery as well as for throw pillow casings. If used as a curtain it needs to be provided with a backing that will absorb the sunlight since chenille easily fades in sunlight. The best chenille fabric for curtains would be one made from cotton, olefin or acrylic and not from rayon.
Linen
Linen is the most time-honored curtain material since they are highly resistant to fading making them perfect for rooms that get plenty of direct sunlight. Linen’s fleck detailing and hand-made appearance makes it also a perfect throw pillow cover giving a room a homey feeling.
